DIY Mother’s Day Gifts to Say I Love You, Mom!

It’s that time of the year when we put the spotlight on our moms! Mother’s Day is just a few days away. It’s not too late for a DIY gift, made with love!

Surprise Your Mom with a DIY

Whether you’re on a tight budget or have ample funds to splurge, remember a gift for your mother isn’t about the cost. And it’s not just a cliché. A gift that tells of how much thought, effort, and meaning you’ve put into it will melt hearts. More so if it’s your beloved mother.

With a DIY present in hand, you can make this Mother’s Day an extra memorable one for her.

Have a look at this list of Mother’s Day gift ideas we’ve put together. Pick something that you think your mom would love and put a smile on her face.

Wood Herb Planter

This wood herb planter is perfect for moms who love gardening or cooking, or both.

How to Make It

Refurbish an old wooden pallet with varnish or gloss. Affix a couple of planks to create pockets for holding the soil or small planters. Plant some of her favorite herbs. We suggest you try basil, rosemary, thyme or chives.

You may give it a country or rustic chic look by labeling the herb sections, in your own handwriting. They don’t have to look perfect. The key is to make the planter look personalized, not store bought.

Faux Agate Coasters

These are stylish, elegant, and inexpensive! These faux agate coasters make pretty presents for Mother’s Day.

How to Make It

Make your mom happy by creating coasters made of polymer clay that you can make to look like agate with some acrylic paint, gloss glaze, and gold liquid leaf. They look fancy but they’re actually quite easy to make. You don’t even need to have mad painting skills, just simple basic strokes are enough to create these classy coasters. Check out this step-by-step tutorial.

Agate stones are precious stones that don’t come cheap. Of course, you may go ahead and give your mom this gemstone that’s known for its soothing properties. But if you can’t afford it for now, go for the next best thing, faux agates.

Home-made Spa Treatment Kit

Let your mom enjoy a soothing spa at home anytime she wants with a DIY exfoliating scrub and lavender milk bath kit.

How to Make It

You may use cooking salt, sea salt, or Epsom salt for the scrub. Customize the scrub by using your mom’s favorite scent and colors. A wide range of essential oils are easily available in the market like jasmine, lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus. You may also add dried rose petals or lavender buds to add to the luxurious spa feel. Here’s a simple recipe you can try.

For the DIY lavender milk bath, you only need three ingredients – half a cup of baking soda, 15 drops of lavender essential oil, and one and a half cup of powdered whole milk. Simply combine the baking soda and essential oil. Mix well, then add in the milk. Put in an airtight clear glass bottle.

Put these two in a pretty woven basket with a note card that carries a sweet message to your mom.

Every mom deserves to be pampered, Mother’s Day or not. This gift will keep working wonders for her for days.

Song Lyric Plate

Have your mom’s all-time favorite song served on a plate for her to relish, literally!

Song lyric plates make great, unique gifts because they combine music and meal in a creative way. And the fact that your own handwriting is incorporated in the gift makes it even more personalized and meaningful.

How to Make It

All you need are a dollar store white ceramic plate, porcelain or Vitrea marker, and painters tape. You may also do this with a coffee mug if your mom is a coffee lover. This DIY project is sure to put a smile on your mom’s face.

To add more fun, burst into a song with her and sing the lyrics together once she’s opened the gift! Let her heart sing on Mother’s Day.

Creative Serving Tray

With this DIY project, creativity is served! If your mom loves pretty and practical items in her kitchen, this the perfect present to pick.

Homemakers and culinary enthusiasts love a lovely tray or two in their kitchen arsenal, making it a wonderful gift for moms. Elegant serving trays add a dash of class to tablescapes, and impress guests coming over for dinner.

How to Make It

You can simply customize a plain serving tray by choosing a lovely fabric, wrapping paper, craft paper, or wallpaper and lining the tray with it. Secure the lining with transparent glue in the corners and instantly turn the tray from simple to stylish, good to glam.

You can also make one from scratch using wood, 2 gilded handles or rustic ropes, and paint. If you have some basic carpentry and painting skills, then use them to create a fancy and functional tray. You can do geometric patterns, shabby chic, vintage, abstract, or floral designs.

Pick a theme that you think your mom will love and use your creative chops to make it pretty.

Pop-up Photo Box

Of course, a collection of your mom’s and your family’s photos is a great gift idea! Especially when you creatively put them together yourself.

Let this fun and heartwarming pop-up photo box bring back fun memories to your mom and tell a story of what an amazing woman she is.

How to Make It

For this project, you’re going to need only a few things like a wood box, scrapbook paper, hot glue, paint, and ribbon. A little accordion folding, photo sticking, and designing can turn a simple box into a cool album of your mom and your family’s photos she’ll cherish.

Coffee Cup Holder

This is perfect for moms who love their coffee or tea. This DIY coffee cup holder is a great way to store and organize coffee cups and make them easily accessible while doubling as a unique wall art.

It can instantly add a vintage café vibe to the kitchen when hung on a wall with the coffee or tea cups hanging on it.

How to Make It

To create this, you will need a piece of wood or a wood board, chalk paint of your mom’s favorite colors, chalk paint brush, hooks, and layering block (optional). You can start by painting the wood with the base color, let it dry. Layer it with other colors by using a layering block to create a distressed look. Screw a couple of hooks on the surface, place them well.

You may add and paint more designs if you like or write an inspiring quote if you can do calligraphy. If not, stencil is always a good option.

Sparkle Mug

Let your mom take a sip of her latte or tea like royalty!

This DIY sparkle mug is uber chic and elegant. What’s best is that it is dishwasher safe, too! Gather the materials, get down to work, and see this glittering piece shine in gorgeous glory!

How to Make It

To make this mug fit for a queen, you will need: glass or ceramic mug, masking tape, Martha Stewart decoupage medium or dishwasher safe mod podge, paintbrush, silver or gold glitter (or your mom’s favorite color).

Begin by taping off the mug including the handle with the masking tape. Use a paintbrush to apply the decoupage medium or dishwasher safe mod podge below the tape. While still wet, generously drench the part in glitter. While the decoupage medium is still wet, carefully peel off the masking tape.

Place the mug upside down on a flat surface to let it dry for 8 hours or overnight. After drying, generously dab over the glitter with the decoupage medium. Let it dry again, glitter side up.

Again, apply a thin coat of the decoupage medium over the glitter. Do these 1 to 2 times more. Curing takes 28 days. Inform your mom to keep it until it’s ready for use.

This fabulous piece is worth the wait and effort.
